STRATA-EAST Reissues!
Chaz MartensteinYears ago, a collection came into the shop that had belonged to a former Director of Jazz Studies at Duke. At the time I was somewhat unaware of what I was looking at as I flipped through LPs on, among many others, Tribe Records, Black Jazz Records, and Strata-East Records. I passed on some that weren't in the best of shape, which I regret to this day, but I quickly fell in love with the ones I bought. Every record boasting these label logos was powerful and glowing with spirit. They were electric. It was an amazing class in 70s spiritual jazz that would inspire a new direction in my personal listening. I couldn't part with most - sorry shoppers from 10 years ago!
Over the years Black Jazz started getting reissued by Real Gone Music and Tribe started seeing represses on Now-Again Records. Pure Pleasure put out a few too, but CHARLES TOLLIVER & STANLEY COWELL's Strata-East wasn't seeing too much action. But! That's now changing thanks to the folks who manage the label and their partners at the Mack Avenue Music Group. They're getting the same high quality treatment we've recently seen with OJC, Blue Note's Tone Poet Series, and Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series. Take note. These are important records.
