Greensboro heat. Numero Group's latest release in their outstanding Eccentric Soul series sees the label zeroing in on late '60s Greensboro, NC. Right up the street. It's a great collection of fired up soul and grooved-down ballads. All of 'em party starters. It's packed. The label was founded by Walter Grady, originally of Dunn, NC, who set up shop around the North Carolina A&T campus and started looking for a hit. The tracks didn't necessarily make it big in the wider commercial sense, but the talent and energy caught here is immeasurable. One could think the lack of overall hits could be more of a managerial issue than an artist one. Who knows? Gems all around.
There's a great interview with one of the compilation's producers over on WUNC by Brian Burns.
