It Came From the Floor: Sonic Youth's New Live 2LP
Chaz MartensteinThe day started with a little gentle revving of the engines to a couple MINUTEMEN LPs (What Makes a Man Start Fires and Paranoid Time), and devolved into JESUS LIZARD and early-ish SONIC YOUTH time as the day wrapped up. I tried to spin the newly released SCRATCH ACID reissues, but that proved to be a little too much for the mid-week lunch crowd, so I "fixed it" with a quick turn to Jesus Lizard's Down. Totally brought the mood back down to earth and ended up driving the vibe for the remainder of the day.
Here we are now in the last stretch of the shop's open hours and I realized I hadn't yet spun the newly reissued Hold That Tiger 2LP on Superior Viaduct. I came across a busted copy of the CD probably about two decades ago and was enamored by the bootleg aesthetic of it. It documents a live recording of Sonic Youth's October 14th, 1987 show at Chicago's Cabaret Metro, and I'm so stoked to now have a gorgeously packaged, remastered vinyl copy to add to the stacks. Thick cardboard jacket. The recording is beautifully clear and loud and the band is energized, noisy, and tight. A perfect SY show. Continuing in this dizzying series of live Sonic Youth recordings, thanks to Silver Current, Goofin, and now Superior Viaduct, it's a must own if you're a fan. The show wraps up with a blistering set of four Ramones covers. Gabba gabba youths.
