Wewantsounds are back with a superb selection of spiritual jazz and funk grooves from legendary producer Bob Shad's Mainstream Records catalogue. Bob Shad was one of the greatest music producers of the 20th century, having worked with all the music giants, from Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to Sarah Vaughan, Lightnin' Hopkins, The Platters, and Janis Joplin to name just a few. "Bobby Shad was a legend in our family" says his grandson Judd Apatow who, together with his sister Mia, looks after Shad's back catalogue, Mainstream Records. Like his peers, jazz producers Creed Taylor and Bob Thiele, Shad went independent in the '60s, and by the early '70s, he was producing a string of superb albums mixing spiritual jazz with funk and soul. These albums are now being rediscovered by new generation of soul and jazz lovers hooked on the music of Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings. Recorded between 1971 and '73, the Fender-Rhodes-drenched tracks on Inner Peace showcase Shad's unique deep jazz sound. They feature such revered musicians as Harold Land, Roy Haynes, and Frank Foster, together with a younger generation of talented musicians led by Buddy Terry, Dave Hubbard, and LaMont Johnson. Here they are accompanied by the cream of '70s jazz session musicians including Bernard Purdie, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, James Mtume, Stanley Clarke, and Cecil Bridgewater. The Mainstream catalogue has been sampled by a long list of revered DJs and hip hop producers over the years. Roy Haynes's "Senyah" was sampled by De La Soul on "Pony Ride" and Shelly Manne's short outro "Infinity" forms the unmissable backbone of Jeru The Damaja's all-time hip hop classic, "Come Clean". A fitting tribute to the supreme sound of producer Bob Shad. Wewantsounds will start a reissue program of original Mainstream albums with bonus material and rare photos from the vaults. Although Mosley has already released three independent albums, beginning with 2005's Sicaceremony, he remains relatively unknown to the mainstream -- a fact that leaves him plenty of creative breathing room for his move to the storied Verve label. That said, once you place him in the context of having previously appeared on fellow West Coast Get Down member saxophonist Kamasi Washington's breakthrough The Epic, not to mention rapper Kendrick Lamar's genre-bending masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, expectations start to cloud the horizon. Thankfully, Mosley brings the musical sun on this earthy, bold, spiritually uplifting collection of singer/songwriter jazz, funk, and R&B. Notably, Uprising grew out of the same ambitious 30-day jam session in 2012 that produced Washington's The Epic. Along with Washington, Uprising also features WCGD members pianist Cameron Graves, drummer Tony Austin, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, and background vocalists and a horn section. Together, Mosley and his WCGD comrades dive headfirst into a roiling jazz-funk stew that balances a vintage analog vibe with a modern immediacy that never feels retro. It's an organic approach, rooted in strong, hard-funk beats, soulful melodies, and thoughtful lyrics that find Mosley joyously announcing his arrival on the scene. On the forceful opener "Young Lion," framed by explosive horns and Woody Aplanalp's Hendrix-style fuzztone guitar, Mosley sings, "Nod your head, push out your lips/Thank God for me/Ain't never been funky since '73." What strikes you most on Uprising is just how well Mosley commands attention, his robust upright acoustic bass anchoring the band with swaggering aplomb. His skills as a bassist are even more impressive when you realize he's also holding down the mike with his urgent, textured croon. This is funk played by someone with equal respect for the hard bop traditions of performers like Charles Mingus and for the emotive R&B of Otis Redding. Admittedly, for a jazz-influenced album, there's not much improvisation on Uprising -- the focus is on Mosley's voice, his songs, and an overall group aesthetic. Nonetheless, Mosley achieves an immediately likeable balance of warm, jazz inflections and a percussive hip-hop attitude. And it's not just the rhythmic funk that grabs your attention on Uprising. Tracks like the yearning "L.A. Won't Bring You Down," with its bowed intro, and the sparkling, piano-driven "Sky High," find Mosley drawing upon the modern R&B balladry of artists like John Legend. And yet, as sensitive as Mosley can be, his literate, poetic writing is counterbalanced by a keen self-awareness that often comes off as backdoor braggadocio. As he sings on "Sky High," "You can find the flaws in my confidence/Too much too soon, too hip for the room." Ultimately, the coup d'etat on Uprising is that, while certainly hip, Mosley never comes off as too cool or emotionally detached from the audience he wants to reach.

Jeff Parker is a multi-instrumentalist best known as a member of Tortoise as well as his work with Isotope 217, Fred Anderson, Rob Mazurek, Tricolor, Chicago Underground, Brian Blade Fellowship, Makaya McCraven, Toumani Diabaté, Matana Roberts, and Meshell Ndegeocello In celebration of Thrill Jockey’s 25th anniversary Parker’s 2005 album The Relatives returns to vinyl for the first time in over a decade. The EP is the first new music from Washington since his universally acclaimed 2015 debut album The Epic. Harmony of Difference explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.” Washington’s suite includes visual elements married to the musical works and draws voraciously on jazz for its foundation. Each of the first five movements is its own unique composition. “Truth,” the sixth movement, fuses all five compositions into one simultaneous performance. Beyond the artistic impulse to expand the possibilities within counterpoint, Washington wanted to create something that opened people’s minds to the gift of diversity. In his own words, “my hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realize the beauty in our own differences.” “Against a backdrop of “fake news,” chemical warfare and presidential missteps, Washington’s 13-minute opus thrives with gospel-infused power, resting alongside his previous work while occupying new sonic space…. Following their previous album Lost Voices (2016 Juno nominee for Instrumental Album and winner for Album Packaging), Esmerine embarked on a soundtrack commission for an NFB documentary about independent journalism in the Middle East. Those sessions kept rolling throughout 2016-2017, informed by anxiety over the reactionary, regressive, seemingly irresolvable disharmony of human oppression/domination and our ever-accelerating degradation/denial of nature. Mechanics Of Dominion is Esmerine's most dynamic and narratively-informed work, tracing an arc through Neo-Classical, Minimalist, Modern Contemporary, Folk, Baroque, Jazz and Rock idioms to invoke lamentation, meditation, resolve, resistance and hope. It is a requiem for our intractably complex and suffering planet and a paean to the imperative wisdom of indigenous ethics. Stylistically, the album brings mallet instruments to the fore: marimba, glockenspiel and piano are a prominent through-line on the album's diverse tracks. Montreal visual artist Jean-Sebastien Denis provides brilliant abstract compositions for the album's deluxe artwork and packaging.

<a href="http://esmerine.bandcamp.com/album/mechanics-of-dominion">Mechanics Of Dominion by Esmerine</a>

Repress. Simultonality is the follow-up to Joshua Abrams's critically acclaimed 2015 album Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015). Recorded in 2014 and 2015 in single takes by the full ensemble during and after tours of the US and Canada, Simultonality once more affirms the project's unique approach to joining traditional musics, American minimalism, and jazz with the Gnawa ceremonial instrument the guimbri. Stasis, continuity, and repetition, central qualities of Abrams language, defined Magnetoception, listed by many as one of the best records of 2015. But where Abrams once said Magnetoception is about "winter and death", Simultonality, in Abrams's words, is an album of "pure motion". Without sounding frenetic it is the most explosive NIS music on record, and without sounding over-determined, it is Abrams's most structured and through-composed music yet. Much of it is also fast, a mass of densely patterned elements swiftly orbiting constantly reconfiguring centers that are variously harmonic and rhythmic, clearly stated or implied. The music is at no time any more disorderly than a colony of bees pollinating a vast garden. Its many moving parts function in mutualistic relationship toward fulfilling Abrams's long stated intention for the project: to help listener's achieve a meditative center and to consciously use music as a gateway to living. Abrams credits William Parker as an inspiration for this intention. It is the only hardcore free jazz record out of 1960s DC, and a viscerally powerful cultural dispatch on the sociopolitical upheavals of its time. From Byron's 2017 liner notes: "In the early spring of 1969, several months before moving to Poughkeepsie, NY, Gerald Wise and I, along with the recording engineer Len Jones, conceived of the idea to gather a group of musicians who were like-minded concerning 'The New Thing' (Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little). I wrote a musical composition for the date dedicated to my father, 'JWM+53.' My friend Earl Snead wrote the other composition, 'Black Awareness.' Earl passed shortly after the session. The recording session took place at the studio of an experimental TV channel that leased space on the campus of Howard University. Gerry and I welcomed all the musicians and thanked them for being part of the session. The scene immediately took on a magical atmosphere, with everyone going about their tasks as if they had cue sheets. In the center of the room we laid out our instruments on two 4x8 tables. That way we could just pick up any instrument and play when the spirit hit us. I had two altos (one plastic) and a curved soprano. Jerry Wise had his trumpet and some hand rhythm instruments. Byard Lancaster had an alto sax, flute, trumpet, and some hand rhythm instruments. Vins Johnson had a tenor and a baritone sax. Keno Speller had a bell tree, tambourines, claves, drum sticks, felt-headed mallets, and a set of amplified conga drums. Inside the tables our two drummers, Eric Gravatt and Abu Sharrieff, sat face to face with two full drum kits and microphones all around them. Next to them were our two bassists, Fred Williams and a young man named Chris (whose last name, sadly, I cannot remember). To this day, I wish the proceedings had been filmed. The energy level was so high that Byard Lancaster did push-ups when not playing (I believe I remember Vins Johnson and Keno Speller also doing some). In spite of all of the excitement, everyone wanted to make a serious musical statement and cooperated in taking directions from Len Jones, Gerry, and me. It was orderly excitement, the collective 'We' caught-up in the moment. Ornette's Free Jazz (1961) and Trane's Ascension (1965) address much of what we were attempting in the studio that day in 1969. . . . In point of fact, most if not all of us had witnessed firsthand the physical excitement and, in some moments, pure terror of the urban riots set off in the spring of 1968 by the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Washington, DC, exploded with anger and the looting and burning of businesses throughout the city. U.S. Army troops, along with Air Force and Navy/Marine elements, were sent in to quell these massive urban disturbances. During the recording of Unity our collective emotions were still raw, to say the least. Here and now, nearly a half of a century later, I can still smell the tear gas and the burning tires. I get chills just thinking about it. This is especially true on the absolutely stunning version of "Summertime." An essential piece of the unique Albert Ayler puzzle, documenting one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th century.
ESP-Disk present a reissue of Albert Ayler's Prophecy, originally released in 1975. It is arguably Chenaux's most assured and essential solo work, expanding upon on the critical acclaim his previous releases Guitar & Voice and Skullsplitter have rightly garnered. Chenaux makes conceptual music that's not meant to sound conceptual. He operates among various 'traditions' but perhaps most broadly, Chenaux's records grapple with the relationship between improvisation and structure in very particular, unique, idiosyncratic ways - and quite without irony or cynicism, through love. Because fundamentally, Chenaux writes love songs, which he sings in a voice honeyed and clear, while his guitar gently bends, frazzes, chortles, diverges and decomposes. He is a singer-songwriter and also a true guitar innovator and improviser. This juxtaposition of his mellow, dexterous crooning and his highly experimental (and equally dexterous) guitar explorations, explodes even unconventional notions of singing and accompaniment, of tonal and timbral interplay between guitar and voice. He’s a staunch force with a monogamous passion for his instrument of choice, the darkly sonorous and notoriously difficult bass clarinet. It’s a testament to Stein’s consummate musicianship and versatility that he plays an indispensable role in a raft of über creative outfits including but not limited to, Mike Reed’s Flesh and Bone, Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society, drummer Quin Kirchner’s Group, James Falzone’s Renga Ensemble, The Charles Rumback Quintet, Kyle Bruckmann’s Wrack, The Russ Johnson Quartet and an electronics fed collective with drummer Chad Taylor and pianist Paul Giallorenzo, Hearts and Minds. But Stein thrives as a leader also, as witnessed by his critically-acclaimed recent quartet release. However, no other aggregation he works with has quite the road legs, perspective, and intimacy of Locksmith Isidore, his long running trio with bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Mike Pride. Of late, this decade old unit has toured arenas throughout the US opening for comedy star Amy Schumer, who happens to be Stein’s kid sister. Presenting avant jazz in such massive venues as Madison Square Garden and LA’s Forum has cemented Locksmith Isidore’s very special bond, which is more than apparent on their fourth album After Caroline.

Stein’s cohorts in Locksmith Isidore are similarly versatile in their playing and experience. New York based drummer Mike Pride’s sock-it-to-ya beats have pushed countless bands. He’s worked with iconoclasts Anthony Braxton and John Zorn, and formatively, hardcore punks Millions of Dead Cops. He’s key to the drive of the locksmith, as is bass ace Jason Roebke. As one of the Chicago scene’s most versatile and in-demand players, Roebke’s sound is at home in all sorts of improvisational music, from the super abstract to swinging jazz.

After Caroline displays all this versatility, and then some. The title derives from the fact that Stein’s paternal grandmother Caroline—wife to the locksmith Isidore—passed away the day the album was recorded. The lovely “You Taught Me How To Love”, which features a tensile contrabass solo from Roebke and skippy brushwork from Pride, is a paean to Caroline. This open hearted ballad demonstrates that despite Stein’s hi-energy capabilities elsewhere, he is at base a tempered melodist. With that said, After Caroline opens in a more expressionistic and churning mode on the improv manifesto “As Many Chances As You Need,” during which the three improvisers forcefully negotiate the squirrelly 19/8 time signature. Though he’s no doubler or dilettante—perhaps because of that—Stein comes at you on his clarinet as if it were a tenor saxophone, and in white-hot, paintstripping moments, his sound recalls the exultant fury of Pharaoh Sanders or Albert Ayler.

After Caroline by Jason Stein's Locksmith Isidore

Avant jazz from Marshall Allen, Fred Frith, Terry Riley, & schoolkids! Over the course of a decade and a multitude of singles and three full-length albums, the project has morphed -- emanated -- into a collaborative, jazz-influenced, outward-facing globally-inspired collective. 2015's The Light Years Of The Darkness album release was a key turning point and a record that saw Woodmansey work with a stellar cast of contributors featuring amongst others Keiran Hebden, aka Four Tet, and trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah. His father instilled in him a life-long passion in drums, teaching him the basics. Plans to go to art college were shelved after he moved to London in 1991, squatting in Dalston, and ensconsing himself in the London music scene. A few years later Woodmansey took a 12-month gig playing drums on a cruise ship, before returning to the UK and spending the next decade playing on the London scene in various projects whilst raising a family -- it was there he decided to go it alone and so in 2006 Emanative was official.
