Hello!!
Another update!! This time I waited long enough so that you could get two whole months of new releases and some choice (though only tip of the iceberg) restock information! And I swear it's not because I'm lazy and didn't get around to it last month....

Oops. Not much to report. Just that it's turning summer, so it's time to break out the old Beach Boys albums and sit on the porch.
I'd like to again use this forum to thank everyone that came out for Record Store Day on Saturday, April 19th, be it in this town or any other. It was absolutely amazing. It's great to feel and remember this huge bond that stretches across all these towns and cities that connects all us music lovers and champions of something that has strangely become referred to as a "dying media." We prove that theory wrong everyday through buying records, starting bands, running labels, running shops, starting distros and just by being avid fans. You can't beat that thrill and grin that comes with discovering something on CD or wax that you've been patiently waiting for.

THANKS!!!
Now you may read on to the good stuff,
And more news at the bottom,
-chaz.

FEATURED STUFF (A few things that stood out last month...)

Thomas Function - Celebration LP (Alive Records) - Garage/Indie. Woah! This release came at us out of nowhere!! Redeye Distribution (out of the Haw River area) ran a pre-order for this album and I dug the 7" they released half a year back or so, so I figured - why the hell not? I'll pre-order it for the promise of receiving a couple colored vinyl copies for the shop, yeah, you got me, I'm a vinyl nerd. I was not expecting that pre-order from a local distro to quickly climb the ranks of my favorite albums released this year. I can't define the album. It's one of those. It's refreshing and new sounding - one of those records that reinvigorates your ears and brain. It's not garage, it's not powerpop and it's not country. It rests somewhere in the exact middle point where all those genres float out in space and meet. No joke. You can't pigeon-hole this thing. It's unpigeonholeable. Somehow in the first week that I got them, I had sold through all 5 copies (CD and LP) that I had gotten into stock. Can't wait for the restock to come in!!

Night Marchers - See You in Magic CD (Vagrant Records) - Rock'n'Roll. Members of Rocket From the Crypt, Hot Snakes and the Delta 72. How can you not win with this one?? Thick, loud rock'n'roll written and played in the style for which we know and love Mr. Speedo (RFTC, Hot Snakes, Sultans, etc.). Seriously, for you fans out there. It's more in the vein of his garagey Sultans project, but spiked with the intensity of the Hot Snakes with a bit more swing. Kyle, I'm looking in your direction. If you know Rocket from the Crypt, it's the same songwriter, but way stripped down - guitars, bass, drums - no horns or filler. Dig it.

The Dodos - Visiter CD (Frenchkiss) - Indie/Folk. Another one that's a little hard to describe! Let's start with this - they're good buddies of locals Megafaun and they're from San Francisco. Does that give you any idea? No? Dang. Hmmm. Well, it's more of that great, epic psychedelic campfire music - big drums, sing-along songs and amazing country/blues(ish) fingerpicking. That's amplified and pedal-ified fingerpicking - for the big sound. They definitely run in the circles of indie Pitchfork-darlings, but in my opinion, they're in a totally different league. Worlds above that is. It's amazing, engaging and energetic music that'll take ya for a spin and make ya smile.

Barbaras - Summertime Road 7" (Goner Records) - Garage/Punk. Goner slings at us yet another ringer! They're recently responsible for the Carbonas and Cococomna's LPs and for half of the other garage junk out there right now. Run by one of the former Oblivians and proprietor of one of the finest music shops anywhere - Goner Records - in Memphis, Tennessee, so I'd say he knows his stuff. This is two thirds of the Boston Chinks (also released a 7" on Goner) who also acted as Jay Reatard's backing band on his last few tours. However. This is more Beach Boy and summer pop induced than Reatard inspired. The recording is in the red and overblown, but you can hear the sweet harmony buried just underneath. Full length on In the Red Records coming soon!!

Retribution Gospel Choir - Retribution Gospel Choir CD (Caldo Verde) - Indie. I really like Alan Sparhawk's songwriting. There's not much like it and definitely not much as inspiring. Sparhawk has his long-running mellow, sadcore project Low and he has his spazzy-chair-kickin'-blues-punk outlet, the Black-Eyed Snakes. They could not be more different. I love both those bands. For this project, he teamed up with a fellow Low man Matt Livingston on bass and Mark Kozelek (who was in the original incarnation of the band) as producer. The result - an amazing album of swelling songs grown too large for the little CD on which they come. They songs rest somewhere in between the graceful, sweeping and engaging Low and the energy of the Black-Eyed Snakes. If you loved the rock vibe set into Low's album the Great Destroyer from a few years back on Sub Pop, then this for you.

All Kill Rock Stars releases this month!!
New Bloods - The Secret Life CD - Indie. Raincoats-inspired indie/punk!!
Old Haunts - Poisonous Times CD - Indie/Garage. Bluesy, creepy indie/garage not too far from the Gun Club or Dead Moon.
Colin Meloy - Sings Live! CD - Indie. Decemberists' songwriter's collection of live, solo tracks. One of the best current songwriters.

The Replacements Reissues!! (Rhino Records)
Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash, Stink, Hootenany and Let It Be all re-released on Rhino!!
Besides being my favorite band ever, they're one of the best bands ever. Ha. Did ya catch that? Should I say it again? Anyway. Each of these albums comes re-released with some kickass un-issued bonus tracks. If you think you already have all the bonus tracks on various bootlegs, like I did (shhhhh), you're still gonna want these as they sound pristine. Their cover of "Temptation Eyes" buried on the Let It Be reissue...man!! I've heard live versions, but it's pretty sweet.

Mission of Burma Reissues!! (Matador / Ace of Hearts)
Signals Calls and Marches, Vs. and The Horrible Truth About Burma all re-released with bonus DVDs! The DVDs are not just the cheesy 30 minute documentaries that you'd expect, but entire live shows caught on video!! That enough has me sold and ready to buy 'em all over again! Reissued on gatefold, double vinyl!!

NEWS & CATCHIN' UP (If there is any to be done...)

Like last time, not much to report here. Well, on second though...
- If you get a second, go out and see my old roommate, Colin Booy's Black Metal Banjo Project. It is, as of yet, unnamed, but it is certainly ferocious. Computer-spewn drumbeats, banjo run through a series of pedals and two amps and a sheet music stand. Awesome.

- Also, keep in touch with WXDU, they've got some great local music in heavy rotation and they're just a good start to the day. The new eberhardt CD has been played every day that I've tuned in! Wooohooo for another roommate!!

- I now carry tickets to the Rollergirls' events. Come out and git yer bout on!! It looks like I should have them a couple weeks in advance up until the Friday before the show. Ten bucks here and something like fourteen bucks at the door. Support the radness!!

- Light in the Attic Records is doing a pretty ingenious pre-sale thing for the new Black Angels release coming out in May. I'm curious to see how this does! I mean that genuinely too - I'm really digging the new album. Dark, death-ratted, psychedelic desert music. For real. You like that description? Real spacey and droney. Anyway. I have a card for sale (13 bucks) that gets you an early download of the complete album and then when it comes out, you bring that card back and I give ya the CD and a 4-song EP not available in any other manner.
It's a sweet way to gauge the popularity of a new release and how many I might want to pull in. Light in the Attic is a great label if you're not familiar. They split their releases between killer reissues (Karen Dalton, Betty Wright) and newer stuff (Black Angels, etc.)

love, chaz.
