Newsletter Feb. '08

-------------------oo0oo-------------------

I'm trying something new. Something I should have done a long time ago. I'm going to attempt to send out a biweekly or monthly newsletter detailing new releases, restocks, news, shows, etc. This one is the first one so it's gonna be a little longer than the ones to come as I figure out what I'm doing. Scroll down and let me know what you do and don't like about it, let me know if you might have some friends that would like to be on it and please let me know if you do not want to be on it.

If you're an out of town friend and you're interested in picking something up, shoot me an email. Not all of this stuff will find its way into the webstore, out of sheer laziness (www.bullcityrecords.com), so let me know if you're looking for something!!

Thanks!!
-chaz.

FEATURED STUFF (A few things that stood out last month...)

Black & Whitess/t 7" (FDH / P. Trash Records) – Garage/Powerpop. A lot slower than their previous 7" on Douchemaster Records, but hell, still really freakin' good. More of a slow, Kinks-ish powerpop drawl thrown into the mix on these recordings. If you picked up that King Louie full length that I was pushing on people last summer, you're gonna love this. Good ol' sticky Mississippi powerpop. Look for their full length in the next week or two!!

Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago CD (Jagjaguwar) – Psych/Folk. Engaging, haunting and sparse folk from this former DeYarmond Edison fella. It's really amazing to see this come out on such a well respected indie label! Justin holed himself up in Northwest Wisconsin and this here is what came out of it. Very reflective of his surroundings and harshly personal. This received an 8.1 on Pitchfork and Grayson didn't even write it!

Dirtbombs We Have You Surrounded CD (In the Red) – Garage. Ahhh, the legendary Detroit garage rawk songwriter returns. Mick Collins has had more bands than you can shake all yer various digits at. (The Gories, the Screws, Blacktop…and the list goes on and on.) Since the mid-80s, he's been churning out some of the best authentic garage heard on Crypt, Sympathy for the Record Industry and In the Red. I like this album a lot. He toned down a lot of the Detroit soul he brought onboard for the last record, and went back to the good ol' raw Detroit rock'n'roll. A bit more noisey and a bit more sloppy. Great record.

Gutter Twins Saturnalia CD (sub pop) – Indie/Rock. The combined forces of Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan. (Afghan Whigs / Screaming Trees). Yeah, the smoothest two dudes in indie rock. Dark, moody, depressing songwriting doesn't get much better than this. One for those late nights when you're alone and you just need one more beer or shot.

Hex Dispensers Lose My Cool 7" (Douchemaster) – Garage. Brash, catchy and spirited as hell. This is the brand new project from an equally prolific garage rawker – Alex Cuervo. He even played with Mick back in Blacktop many, many moons ago. This guy is one of my favorite garage songwriters, I might even put him above Mick Collins. It's blasphemy, I know, sorry. The choruses are enough to hook you, but the music is pure grit rawk 'n' roll. This here 7" might have just reignited my recently floundering love for garage. Bring me a beer, pull out the portable record player and let's us have a party.

Megafaun Bury the Square CD (Table of Elements) – Psych/Folk. Local favorites. Psychedelic hootenany campfire songs. Their CD just got re-released by the Table of Elements label in brand new packaging. No more hand-sewn, hand-stamped copies left, sorry folks! One of the best local releases of last year!!

Honorable Mentions:
Little Wings Soft Pow'r – Rambling, mellow indie folk. K Records style.
Mars Volta Bedlam in Goliath – Proggy, psychedelic, spazzy, space rock.
Monkeywrench Gabriel's Horn – It's Mark Arm, Steve Turner and Tim Kerr fer chrissakes!!!
Nada Surf Lucky – Heavily melodic indie rock. Very good!!
School of Language Sea from Shore – Dude from Field Music's new project!

NEWS (If there is any...)

Not much to report right now. As most everyone knows I shattered the ol' wrist back in January, so that's made work very interesting...to say the least. I wanted to thank everyone for their support and concern over the last month. It's meant a lot!! So, thank you! I'm currently in rehab for the wrist, so if you come in and see a sock on my arm, that's not a new fad I'm trying to start, I'm probably just doing exercises. Unless you think it's a cool fad, then run with it.
Please let me know what you do and don't like about this newsletter or if you'd like off.

Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors!

Thanks everyone!!
love, chaz.
